Solo-RC-2We asked the 3DR Solo Owners Facebook group to post questions that they wanted answered. We did the interview and posted our responses.

  • GPS specs (which chip, does it have GLONASS and Galileo support): Unknown at this time. Cannot disclose until we get the green light, sorry guys.
  • Battery prices?: $150
  • Controller frequency (2.4 or 5.8 GHz)?: 2.4
Future gimbal models (which cameras supported)?: You will be able to add other gimbals on the market using the accessory port.
  • Pixhawk 2 specs, is it going to be available separately?: Yes, unfortunately we cannot disclose this information at this time
  • Is the backpack an official accessory? Price?: The backpack is an official accessory that is available separately. $150 for the backpack
  • When the iOS app will be in App Store?: Closer to the actual ship date for tier 1 dealers
  • Any discount coupons available for fanboys?: Unfortunately no, however we (Total Control Innovations) will be offering a cash back reward system on our website. We can help you sell your Iris+ if need be, please feel free to contact us. [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected]
  • Where is Solo’s antenna? Is it user replaceable, e.g., with a circular polarized one?: The antennas are located inside the Solo’s legs. It will most likely not be user replaceable as it’s a 1GHz downlink.
  • What are the connectors for the pixhawk 2 (df13, etc)?: Unfortunately we cannot disclose this information at this time, when we get the green light we will be glad to post this information.
  • MSRP for the solo?: The Solo starts at $999 and includes the GoPro naked housing, not a 3 or 2 axis gimbal. The 3 Axis gimbal will start at $399
  • On May 29th, where will you be able to purchase? 3DR is providing their tier 1 dealers with exclusivity, thus Total Control Innovations will be receiving their first batch at the end of May. www.tcidrones.com
  • What is the frequency for RC controls and HD link?: 2.4
  •  What is the latency for hd link?: Latency is less than 100ms
  • Can you use 2 devices on the underbelly at the same time (gimbal + px4flow)?: Yes you can, these accessories can be added at any time. So take your time!
  • Will other gimbals be available?: Not from 3DR however you will be able to utilize other gimbals on the market, some gimbals may prevent certain features.
  • What is the all up weight?: 1500grams with no payload and 1800grams with the GoPro and the 3 Axis Gimbal
  • What spare parts will be available?: Basic spare parts will be available at first (e.i. motors, props, body, legs, etc.) Over time major parts will become available. We (Total Control Innovations) will be carrying many of the parts.
Will a bigger battery be available?: Not at this time.
  • Can a 2nd operator control the gimbal?: No, fortunately 3DR has designed the software and app in a way that a 2nd operator is not needed. Please email [email protected] [email protected] or [email protected] for more information.
  • Will tower be deprecated?: Unknown at this time
  • Why was the vibration so bad in the video done by the verge?: The settings on the gimbal were not properly set on the Solo, thus there was excess vibration. We have seen over 5 Solo’s at work at the same time and the video was clear with no vibration
  • Do the batteries have DRM?: Unknown at this time, from the looks of it and the hints provided, Yes
  • What is the CPU used in Solo and controller?: Unfortunately we cannot disclose this information at this time. However we are allowed to disclose the below information:There is a black box inside the remote control as well as the Solo, thus if there is ever a “FlyAway” you can create a support ticket right from the APP and send it to 3DR. 3DR tech support will analyze the data and determine if it’s a user based error or software based error. If the software is deemed responsible, 3DR will replace the Solo and gimbal and provide you with a credit towards a new GoPro camera. Support will be 24/7 365.
  • What kind of battery charger comes with Solo? Can more than one battery be charged at time?: Regular LiPo AC wall charger is included. Currently only one battery can be charged at a time.
When do you release full specs and documentation (user guides etc)?: This information will be released closer to the sale/pre-order date of the Solo
  • What are the prices in Euros?: The current price of the Solo with the GoPro Naked Housing is $999 USD
  • Are there any public “Made for Solo” partners?: Not as of yet, however this is something 3DR is planning on accomplishing. Companies/End Users will be able to design made for Solo parts/accessories and partner with 3DR for integration
  •  What material is the Solo chassis?: High grade plastic similar to some gaming platforms on the market…hint hint
  • Will the gimbal be charging the go pro while in flight? Will that reduce flight time?: The gimbal will be charging the GoPro and may reduce flight time if you begin your flight with a dead GoPro. It is always recommended to always have your GoPro charged prior to placing it on your multirotor.
  • Can solo be use with pix 4d as is the iris + because off the geo tagging?: Unfortunately we cannot disclose this information at this time
  • Is swarm possible?: Not at this time.
  • Are we going to get a bonus or rebate voucher for our contribution with so many feedbacks?: Unfortunately no, however we (Total Control Innovations) will be offering a cash back reward system on our website. We can help you sell your Iris+ if need be, please feel free to contact us.
  • There’s rumor that the RC, telemetry, and FPV video all on the same frequency band (2.4GHz). Is this true?: Yes
  • As I say, “go to the shop floor” if you want to learn anything about your product. Will you consider reaching out to some of the expert users who reside on this page for future testing?: 3DR may look into doing this, however we cannot confirm this at this time.
  •  Range of video transmission and will it be HD?: 3000-4000 feet in rural areas 1200-1500 in urban environments. Yes it will be HD.
  • Indoor flight assistance?: This will be available as an accessory, however the price point is unknown. Direct from Colin “The price will not be ridiculously high”
  • Speed (vertical, ascend, descend): Unknown at this time
  • Loitering accuracy, horizontal and vertical: Unknown at this time
  • Thrust, payload (50% reserve, absolute max): Unknown at this time
  • Does the controller have tactile output? Speech synthesis?: It is reported that the controller does have this, however the voice is unknown.
  • Does the controller have accelerometers (can Solo be controlled by tilting the controller?: No, thus you cannot control the gimbal with the remote control
  • Does follow me work without the controller, i.e., can I keep iPhone in pocket while cycling and leave the controller behind?: Yes, however the phone must have WiFi turned on.
  • Flight time, cost of each addition module?: Flight time will be approximately 20 minutes with payload. Cost of each additional module is unknown at this time. We have been given the green light to release the price of the gimbal $399, backpack $150, and battery $150.
  • Technical Spec?: Not all information is available to endusers at this time. Once we get the green light to release specific information we will be glad to follow up.
  • Also, can a full size 9.7″ iPad Air fit? The biggest tablet I’ve seen fitted on the controller is an iPad Mini: This is a great question, unfortunately we were not able to confirm a simple question like this. We will follow up with 3DR tomorrow.
  • Is this a real product instead of vapor Ware? Will all advertised features be avaoailable at launch or is this a marketing effort alla DJI’s?: This is the real deal. The Solo will be available at the end of May. The advertised features will be available at the same time.
  • Does anybody know if the case displayed in last weeks teaser will come with the solo?: The case displayed in last weeks teaser will not come with the Solo, however this will be an official accessory from 3DR. Cost of $150. There is a poor mans version of a case inside the OEM cardboard box.
  • Why do they want to distribute through box box stores like best but instead of hobby stores that know how to sell and support the product?: Great question Kerry Garrison, the simple answer to your question is logistics. 3DR is performing a soft launch with big box stores like Best Buy, however the one concern they have is marketing, customer service, and most importantly in retail…returns. Unfortunately these CE/Big Box Stores do not have any knowledge about drones/multirotors, thus my recommendation would be to alway purchase from a “drone store”…somewhat of a biased opinion but you understand
