Obstacle Sensing System

The most interesting and revolutionary feature of the Phantom 4 is the “Obstacle Sensing System” that allows the drone to detect and avoid obstacles in its flight path. The system relies on two front facing cameras, as well as the downward facing sensors and cameras built into the body shell. If the system senses and object within approximately 50 feet of the drone, it will start to slow down. If an object is within approximately six feet of the drone, then it will fly around the object, stop and hover or fly over the object.

Active Track

In addition to the “Obstacle Sensing System” the Phantom 4 also features and objecting tracking system maned “ActiveTrack” This system allows the user to select and object via the DJI Go app, the Phantom’s computer then builds a 3D model of the object, allowing the computer to control the drone to keep the object centered in the frame. With “ActiveTrack” activated, the Phantom 4 is able to track the subject while also avoiding obstacles. While normal GPS based follow me systems have a effective range of 10-20 feet, with the new “ActiveTrack” feature this is reduced to 4-6 feet.

TapFly Mode

With the new TapFly mode, the user can simply tap on the screen to send the phantom flying in that direction. With the new sense and avoid system you can simply watch the drone fly without having to worry about avoiding obstacles.

Intelligent Flight Battery

The DJI Phantom 4 features an all new Intelligent Flight Battery which allows for up to 28 minutes of flight time. The battery features 4 cells containing 5350 mAh at 15.2 Volts. The intelligent portion of the battery records charge/discharge data, along with regulating the charging and discharging of the battery.

Integrated Camera/Gimbal

The Phantom 4  includes a newly designed camera/gimbal system that allows for unprecedented aerial photos/videos. The gimbal features and all new U shaped frame design, this all new design allows for better stabilization and control accuracy. The updated camera allows the user to shoot 4K video at 30FPS, as well as 1080P at 120FPS for slow motion video. DJI has redesigned the camera lens on the Phantom 4, this new lens produces photos/videos with increased sharpness and focus.

Multiple Flight Modes

The DJI Phantom 4 works off of the success of the DJI Phantom 3 by featuring multiple flight modes. These flight modes include P (Position), S (Speed) and A (Attitude). In P (Position) mode you can use TapFly, ActiveTrack, Vision Positioning and Intelligent Flight Modes. In S (Speed) mode the copter can reach it top speed of 45mph (72kph). In A (Attitude) mode the Phantom will still maintain altitude and level, but turns off GPS position hold. This mode is ideal for achieving smooth aerial filming.

Built-In Redundancies

The Phantom 4 features dual compass and dual IMU’s (Inertial Measurement Units), this allows the Phantom to constantly check the data that it is receiving.

Push and Release Propellers

The new prop mounts are redesigned and allow for quick connect/disconnect of the propellers. The mechanism allows the propeller to withstand harsh turning forces.

GPS Flight Positioning

The DJI Phantom 4 uses both GPS and GLONASS technologies, this allows the drone to acquire up to 24 satellites. The dual technologies also allow the drone to lock on to the maximum number of satellites in the least amount of time.
